NEWS FLASH!!! JANUARY 13, 2017 NMC DECISION REGARDING INDEMNITY ARRANGEMENTS FOR IMUK MEMBERS.
Our professional regulator the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) have issued a decision that the indemnity cover that our members rely on is not appropriate. The implication of that decision is that currently our members may no longer provide the midwifery care that their clients want and are unable to support them through labour and birth. We are confident that the indemnity arrangements that are in place for our members are appropriate and that they comply fully with the requirements of the law.
We have been advised that the decision the NMC has taken is unlawful and some individual members of IMUK are pursuing a legal challenge; their solicitors are awaiting a formal response from the NMC as to whether they will withdraw their decision. We cannot comment further on the proposed legal proceedings at this stage. In the meantime, we are doing everything we can to put in place suitable alternative arrangements to ensure that our member’s clients can still enjoy the birth experience of their choice in safety. We are in urgent discussions with NHS England about the practical issues that the NMC’s decision has created in this regard. The midwifery director and chief nurse in NHS England are being supportive and are helping our efforts. The health and safety of the women under their care remains the first priority for all our members and we will continue to work with our members and NHS England to achieve that within the constraints imposed by the decision of the NMC. We appreciate your support during this turmultuous time and whilst we prioritise our members and their clients. Please follow our social media channels for further updates.

I am an independent midwife and a full member of Independent Midwives UK (IMUK) I am self employed and do not work for any private provider of midwifery services.
I do have Registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council of the UK.
I offer to the best of my ability a midwifery service in and around Somerset
When you choose an independent midwife you can expect gold standard care:
- Appointments in your home at times to suit you
- One-to-one midwifery care for true continuity & building a trusting relationship
- Tailor made care from pregnancy & up to 28 days after the birth of your baby
- Separate care packages by arrangement
The consultation in your home which gives us the opportunity to meet each other prior to booking. This is an informal meeting and gives you and your partner the chance to ask questions and also get an insight to how I work. I then ask for you to think about whether you would like to book with me. If you think I am the right independent midwife for you, we can arrange the 'booking' appointment. This usually lasts a couple of hours in your home over a cup of tea and filling out our contract as well as your notes. I leave you with your own set of personal hand held notes.
